What Is Coroplast?

Corrugated plastic is made from polypropylene with two flat faces connected by internal flutes.

The fluted structure keeps the sheet light while giving it enough stiffness for many temporary sign applications. Coroplast is the best-known brand name in this category, and its manufacturer identifies signs and reusable packaging as core uses.

Why 4 mm Is Common for Yard Signs

Corrugated plastic is sold in several thicknesses. For sign work, 4 mm is one of the most common gauges because it balances weight, stiffness, cost, and compatibility with standard wire stakes.

Very light material for small displays and applications with support.
Not the usual starting point for standard yard signs.
4 mm

Why the Flutes Matter

The internal channels are part of the structure. Their direction affects bending, cutting, and how hardware such as wire stakes enters the sheet.

For standard yard signs, the flutes normally run vertically.

This allows the legs of an H-stake to slide into the channels from the bottom edge.

For custom shapes, folds, or specialty mounting, flute direction should be considered before the sheet is printed and cut.

  • ACM or Aluminum: the sign is long-term and needs more rigidity.
  • Foam Board: the sign is an indoor presentation piece with a smoother paper face.
  • Styrene: the project needs a thin solid plastic sheet without flutes.
