What Newark Permits and What It Prohibits
Chapter 41:9 of the zoning regulations is unusually explicit about sign types. Knowing which side of the line a design falls on is what separates a fast approval from a redesign.

- Channel letters and halo lighting — the only internal illumination allowed on a wall sign
- Wall signs at ten percent of the wall — capped at 50, 70 or 100 sq ft by building type
- Projecting signs — 6 sq ft, up to 4 ft out, 8 ft clear beneath, on right-angle brackets
- Opaque awnings with signage on the valance
- Permitted
- Light box signs — stated in the ordinance in those words
- Electronic message centers and digital displays — citywide, variance only
- Roof signs above the roofline, and digital billboards outright
- Translucent awnings of any material
Modifying a non-conforming sign in shape, size, illumination, material or structure forces the whole sign to conform. A like-for-like LED swap is one thing; a new face on a prohibited cabinet is another. A sign damaged beyond half its replacement cost has to be rebuilt to conform as well.

A sign permit comes from the Zoning Officer, with a construction permit from the Construction Official where the Uniform Construction Code calls for one. In a designated historic district the application is referred to the Landmarks and Historic Preservation Commission, and upper-level building identification is prohibited on key, contributing and individually landmarked buildings.
The application is filed by you or your landlord. We assist with permits; we do not file them on your behalf. The permit is issued to you by the City of Newark, and no sign company can promise you an approval.

Newark Sign Questions
No. The ordinance permits internal illumination on a wall sign only through channel letters or halo lighting, and states that light box signs are not permitted. A lit name on the building means fabricated letters. That costs more per square foot than a printed face, so it belongs in the budget conversation rather than the permit one.
A front-lit channel letter has an acrylic face and throws light forward, so the letter itself glows. A halo-lit or reverse-channel letter has a solid face and an open back, and the light washes the wall behind it to leave a glow around the shape. Halo reads as more restrained and holds up better on brick and stone; front-lit carries further at night. Both are permitted here, and we build either.
Newark works from the wall rather than the frontage: ten percent of the wall area associated with your tenant space, capped at fifty square feet in a mixed-use building, seventy for a detached commercial building, and one hundred for a single-tenant or industrial one. Width is capped too — the full wall width below thirty feet, seventy-five percent at thirty and above. Send the dimensions and we will give you the number.
Not without a use variance. Electronic message centers and digital displays are not permitted anywhere in the city under the current zoning regulations, and digital billboards are prohibited outright. A variance is a board process with its own timetable, and the board decision comes before any hardware order.
Yes. Illuminated signs are extinguished half an hour past the close of business, and the code requires an automatic timer rather than someone remembering. Exceptions exist where state or federal law requires illumination or where there is a demonstrated security need. We wire the timer in as standard rather than leaving it to retrofit.

Yes. Campuses, hospitals and agencies in Newark buy through procurement, and that means drawings, product data, insurance certificates, a submittal trail and scheduled access to occupied buildings. Send the solicitation or the specification and we will say plainly what we can meet and what we cannot, rather than discovering it at handover. Wayfinding and room identification for a whole building are specified as one schedule so a code officer can check the set against a drawing.
Design and proofing move quickly. Fabricated letters take longer to build than a printed face, and the permit runs to the city’s timetable rather than ours — a historic referral or a board application adds time a straightforward address does not have. We give a realistic date with the quote and name the stage most likely to move.
