Sign Company in Paterson

Custom Signs for Paterson Storefronts

Gogi Signs designs, makes and fits signs for the independent businesses that fill Paterson’s commercial streets. One company handles the drawing, the fabrication, the paperwork and the installation, which on a narrow shopfront matters more than it sounds.

The width is the constraint here. Most Paterson frontages run twenty to thirty feet and share a wall on both sides, so a sign competes at reading distance rather than at forty miles an hour. Letter weight, contrast and finish carry it, and the design question is fitting a legible name into the space without borrowing the neighbor’s facade.

Language is the second one. South Paterson trades in Arabic and Turkish, Market Street and Park Avenue in Spanish, Union Avenue in Bengali. Setting a second script is a layout job rather than a translation job — a right-to-left script needs the whole layout mirrored and the letterforms weighted to sit beside the English, not under it.

Downtown adds a third. Inside the Commercial Historic District an internally lit box will not pass, and painted, gilded and dimensional lettering is what reviews cleanly — work we do rather than send out.

What ties those together is one supplier for the whole run: survey, drawings, build, installation, and the repair when a transformer goes years later.

Our Services

Sign Services for Paterson Storefronts and Trades

The measurements, the artwork, the build, the fitting and the repairs afterwards all sit with the same company.

Sign Design

Layout, letter weight, materials and lighting worked out against your actual frontage rather than a template. Proofs come back at true scale on a photograph of your own building, with a second script set alongside the English where you need one.

Sign Fabrication

Printed, cut, welded, painted and wired to order in aluminum, acrylic, Dibond, PVC and dimensional letters, plus painted and gilded work by hand. Finish and film grade are specified for a street rather than a showroom.

Sign Installation

Certified installers, licensed and insured, with certificates of insurance in your landlord’s name where a building asks. Older masonry takes the right anchor rather than the fastest one, so fixings are chosen for what sits behind the facade.

Site Survey & Permit Drawings

We measure the frontage, check the power already at the wall and photograph the elevation before quoting anything mounted to a building. That survey becomes the drawing set you file with, including the projection dimension the city looks at first.

Sign Repair & Refacing

Failed LEDs and transformers, water in a cabinet, storm and impact damage, faded faces. On a high-turnover strip a reface is often the whole job — the box is sound, only the name has changed — and it costs a fraction of a new build.

Sign Removal

Brackets down, fixings out, holes made good and the facade left the way a landlord expects at the end of a lease. That condition is usually written into the exit, so it is worth doing properly rather than quickly.

Why Paterson Businesses Come Back to Gogi Signs

Repeat customers and referrals from the shop two doors down account for most of what Gogi Signs makes in Paterson. That happens when a sign is still lit and still straight three years on, and when somebody answers the week it is not.

The result is a supplier you call once and keep calling — the first storefront sign, the van lettering two years later, and the reface when the business changes hands.

Our Products

Signs and Lettering We Make for Paterson

What the independents on Main Street, Market Street and Getty Avenue order most, made for one address at a time.

Custom storefront signage nj

Storefront & Fascia Signs

The sign above your door, in flat metal, acrylic, Dibond or dimensional letters. On a narrow unit the work is fitting a readable name into the width you have.

custom channel letters nj

Channel Letters

Individually fabricated letters — front-lit, reverse-lit halo or open-face — wired and inspected to code. Past twelve inches of projection Paterson treats them differently, so depth is settled at design stage.

custom storefront awning

Awnings & Canopies

Printed and lettered awnings, and recovers over frames still worth keeping. Signage, shelter and shade in one, with clearance and setback drawn to the sidewalk it covers.

Window Lettering & Graphics

Cut lettering, full window wraps, frosted privacy film and floor graphics. The cheapest square footage of advertising a glass shopfront owns, and it lifts off cleanly at the end of a lease.

Gold Leaf Style

Gold Leaf & Hand-Painted Lettering

Gilded and painted glass and hand-lettered signs. Downtown, where an internally lit box will not pass review, this is the work that does — and it suits a hundred-year-old facade better anyway.

custom van wraps nj

Van & Truck Lettering

Cut lettering, partial and full wraps and fleet programs, fitted by 3M certified installers. For a trade working out of Paterson, the van reaches the whole county.

Permitting & Zoning

Paterson Sign Permits and Projection Limits

Paterson classifies a sign by how far it stands off the building, and each step up the ladder adds a rule or an office. This is the dimension we settle before drawing anything.

  • Up to 12″ A wall sign Zoning treats anything projecting no more than twelve inches from the building as a wall sign. § 100–6
  • Over 12″ A projecting sign Past twelve inches it is reclassified, and the projecting-sign standards apply instead. § 100–6
  • 18″ or more A Public Works license as well Measured beyond the building line, this brings a separate annual license from the Director of Public Works. § 435–109
  • Below 12 ft Four inches past the street line Where the lowest point of the sign sits below twelve feet above the curb. § 500–8.6.D
  • 12 ft or more Twenty–four inches past the street line Clearance buys projection, so bracket height is designed rather than assumed. § 500–8.6.D

Projecting signs also stay two feet inside the curbline with nine feet clear beneath (§ 435-112), and awnings clear eight feet and stay eighteen inches inside the curbline (§ 435-107).

Division of Community Improvements

Issues the zoning sign permit. Applications go in triplicate, and to the Division of Historic Preservation as well where the address calls for it.

Construction Official

Issues the construction permit, which the code requires before the Public Works license can be granted.

Director of Public Works

Issues the annual license for a sign projecting eighteen inches or more beyond the building line.

Roof signs and anything above the cornice or parapet are prohibited, along with billboards, moving or flashing signs, and exposed neon or incandescent bulbs (§ 500-8.3). Sign area comes from a schedule the Division of Planning and Zoning holds rather than a published figure, so we obtain it for your district before quoting.

The Downtown Commercial Historic District — forty-one acres and around 210 contributing buildings across Main, Market, Ellison, Van Houten and Broadway — carries Historic Preservation Commission review, and its guidelines rule out internally illuminated box signs. Channel and routed letters, painted and gilded work pass there. An address inside an adopted redevelopment area follows that plan instead.

The application is filed by you or your landlord. We assist with permits; we do not file them on your behalf. The permit is issued to you by the City of Paterson, and no sign company can promise you an approval.

Industries We Serve

Paterson Trades and Businesses We Work With

A Market Street shopfront and a warehouse on the river corridor are different jobs, and both are ordinary weeks here.

Independent Retail & Grocery

Main Street, Market Street and Park Avenue — grocers, clothing, phone shops, hardware and discount retail, where the sign is the whole marketing budget.

Restaurants, Bakeries & Cafes

South Paterson and the Broadway corridor. Awnings, fascia signs, menu boards, window lettering and bilingual frontages.

Salons, Barbers & Personal Care

High-turnover units where refacing an existing cabinet beats a new build, and where window graphics do most of the selling.

Healthcare & Clinics

Practices and urgent care around St Joseph’s. Suite signs, ADA room signage, directories and window lettering.

Contractors & Trades

Job site boards, permit and contractor identification, scaffold mesh banners, and van and truck lettering for trades working the whole county.

Mills, Warehousing & Industry

Bunker Hill and the river corridor mill sites. Building identification, dock and bay numbering, safety signage and fleet lettering.

Education & Civic

Passaic County Community College, the schools and the county buildings downtown. Wayfinding, room identification and exterior building signage.

Auto Body & Repair Shops

Body shops, tire and service centers along the Route 19 and Route 20 corridors. Forecourt signage and vehicle graphics on one job.

Your Local Sign Company

Sign Making in New Jersey Since 2005

Being the local sign company shows in small things: somebody picks up when a transformer fails in February, the crew arriving on installation day has read the same drawing as the person who quoted the job, and the artwork is still on file when the business two doors down asks who made your sign.

Hudson County’s official map confirms the compact layout and the close relationship between these municipalities, the major highways, rail systems, waterfront corridors and commercial centers.

For businesses with locations across several Hudson County municipalities, our New Jersey shop can provide one fabrication and installation source while each address is still handled according to its own site and municipal requirements.

FAQs

Questions From Paterson Business Owners

Up to twelve inches it stays a wall sign. Past that it becomes a projecting sign, and at eighteen inches or more beyond the building line it also needs an annual license from the Director of Public Works. There is a separate limit on how far it may cross the street line — four inches where the bottom of the sign sits under twelve feet above the curb, twenty-four inches at twelve feet or higher. Projecting signs stay two feet inside the curbline with nine feet clear beneath.

Paterson trades in several languages and a frontage that ignores that leaves customers on the sidewalk. Setting a second script is a layout job rather than a translation job — a right-to-left script needs the whole layout mirrored and the letterforms weighted to match the English beside them, not shrunk underneath it. Tell us which languages your customers read.

It may well be. The Downtown Commercial Historic District covers roughly forty-one acres and around 210 contributing buildings across parts of Main, Market, Ellison, Van Houten, Broadway and several neighboring streets. Inside it the Historic Preservation Commission reviews sign work before a permit is issued, and the district guidelines rule out internally illuminated box signs. Send the address and we will check before designing anything.

Channel letters and routed letters are permitted there, and painted, gilded and dimensional lettering reviews well. On a hundred-year-old facade those generally look better than an illuminated cabinet anyway, and gold leaf on glass costs less than most owners assume. We make all of it rather than sending it out.

Permitted area comes from a schedule the Division of Planning and Zoning holds, set by zoning district and frontage, rather than from a single figure published in the ordinance. We obtain the figure for your district as part of the survey. If your address sits in an adopted redevelopment area, that plan sets its own limits and supersedes the zoning standards.

It follows the size, the materials, whether it is lit and how it fixes to the building. A window graphic and a set of illuminated channel letters are not remotely the same job. Send the address and a photograph of the frontage and you get a real number rather than a range, along with what the city will need from you.

Yes. Failed LEDs and transformers, water ingress, storm damage and faded faces are routine, whoever built the original. Where the cabinet is sound and only the name has changed, a reface costs a fraction of a new sign and goes up in days rather than weeks.

Design and proofing move quickly. Fabrication depends on the product, and the permit runs to the city’s timetable rather than ours — a historic district review adds a stage a straightforward address does not have. We give a realistic date with the quote and name the stage most likely to move.
