Wood for Carved, Painted and Dimensional Signs

Wood sign work can use solid lumber, plywood, or overlaid wood panels depending on the look and service conditions. Natural grain works well for carved and dimensional signs, while sign-grade panel products such as MDO provide a smoother surface for painted graphics.

— Overview

Wood Is a Material Family, Not One Sign Board

A wood sign can be made from solid lumber, plywood, or an engineered panel, and each behaves differently.

Solid wood provides real grain and can be carved, routed, sandblasted, stained, or painted. Plywood gives the sign maker a panel construction with cross-laminated veneers. MDO adds a resin-treated overlay to plywood to create a smoother paint-ready face for demanding panel applications.

Solid Wood Natural grain, carved lettering, textured backgrounds, dimensional signs, and decorative work.
Plywood Panel-based sign components where layered wood construction is appropriate.
MDO Plywood Overlaid plywood used for painted sign panels and other demanding applications.
Wood Accents Trim, frames, dimensional elements, and branded interior details.

Why MDO Is Different From Ordinary Plywood

Thickness affects stiffness, weight, and resistance to bending. The correct gauge depends on the panel size, mounting method, exposure, and how much support the finished sign has.

MDO Plywood
Basic Plywood
Face
Resin-treated overlay supports smoother painted sign faces.
Face
Wood veneer surface shows more grain, patches, and natural variation.
Use
Made for demanding applications including signage, siding, and transportation.
Use
Broad construction and fabrication material; grade determines suitable applications.
Finish
Commonly chosen when the panel will be primed and painted.
Finish
May require more surface preparation when a smooth painted sign face is wanted.

— Fabrication & Finishing

How Wood Is Used in Sign Making

Wood can be machined with traditional woodworking and CNC equipment. The species, plywood grade, panel construction, moisture content, and final finish affect how the sign should be cut and assembled.

Routing & Carving Dimensional lettering, recessed panels, textures, borders, and relief work.
Painting Primers and paint systems can create opaque sign faces and protect suitable exterior wood.
Staining & Clear Finishes Used when the natural grain is intended to remain visible.
Layering & Framing Wood pieces can be laminated, framed, or combined with metal and dimensional sign elements.

— Limitations

Wood Moves With Moisture and Weather

Wood is hygroscopic, so it gains and loses moisture as environmental conditions change. That can affect dimensions, joints, coatings, edges, and long-term flatness.

Exterior wood signs need the right material and finish system.

Species, panel grade, edge sealing, paint or stain, drainage, mounting, and maintenance all affect service life. Interior MDF or basic untreated plywood should not be substituted for an exterior sign panel.
