— HDU Sign Material

HDU for Routed, Carved and Dimensional Signs

High-density urethane, or HDU, is a closed-cell rigid sign board used for routed letters, carved signs, dimensional backgrounds, sculpted details, and painted sign work. Unlike natural wood, HDU has no grain and does not rot from water exposure.

— Overview

What Is HDU Sign Board?

is a rigid closed-cell polyurethane board made for carving, routing, shaping, priming, and painting.

Sign makers often use it in place of wood when a project needs dimensional detail without wood grain, knots, rot, or insect damage. The uniform cell structure also gives CNC routers and carving tools a predictable material to cut.

Carved Signs Dimensional backgrounds, recessed lettering, textures, and sculpted sign faces.
Routed Letters & Logos CNC-cut lettering, logos, borders, and relief details.
Exterior Sign Panels Painted dimensional panels where a moisture-resistant sign board is needed.
Themed & Decorative Work Shapes, props, architectural details, and specialty fabricated sign elements.

— Density

What HDU Density Means

HDU is sold by density, usually expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Density affects surface detail, strength, machining behavior, hardware holding, and how the board performs in a demanding sign application.

15–18 pcf
General Sign Density
Common range for many routed and carved sign projects.
Good balance of machinability, weight, and detail for typical dimensional signage.
20–30 pcf
Higher-Density Sign Board
Finer cell structure and more material strength for demanding details or handling.
Useful where the project calls for tighter carving, stronger edges, or more substantial fabrication.
Higher Density
Specialty Fabrication
Very dense HDU grades exist for tooling and heavy-duty applications.
Not every sign benefits from extra density; the design and mounting should determine the grade.

— Material Comparison

HDU vs Wood for Dimensional Signs

HDU
Wood
Structure
Uniform closed-cell board with no grain or knots.
Structure
Natural grain, knots, species differences, and moisture movement.
Moisture
Does not rot from water penetration and is not attractive to insects.
Moisture
Exterior wood needs the right species, sealing, finishing, and maintenance.
Fabrication
Predictable CNC routing and carving without grain direction.
Fabrication
Grain contributes character but affects carving and edge behavior.

— Routing & Finishing

How HDU Is Fabricated for Signs

HDU can be routed, carved, sanded, textured, bonded, primed, and painted. Thicker boards can also be laminated or fabricated around internal reinforcement when the sign design requires additional structure.

CNC Routing V-carving, pockets, textures, dimensional lettering, and relief work.
Hand Carving & Shaping Useful for sculpted signs, decorative elements, and hand-finished details.
Priming & Painting HDU is normally finished with a suitable primer and paint system rather than left exposed.
Internal Reinforcement Large signs may use embedded or concealed metal structure because HDU itself is not a structural frame.
