NYC Approvals

How New York City Sign Projects Work

New York City handles signs through one citywide system, which makes the rules more predictable than in New Jersey but the paperwork heavier. These are the approvals and building requirements that shape most of our NYC jobs.

DOB Sign Permit Most business signs need a permit from the Department of Buildings, filed online through DOB NOW. The DOB sign permit page lists what the city requires.
Licensed Sign Hanger Larger and heavier signs must be hung by a licensed sign hanger, which affects who installs and how the job is scheduled.
Electrical Permit Lit signs need a separate electrical permit filed by a licensed electrician.
Landmarks Buildings that are landmarked or inside a historic district need approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
Managed Buildings Most commercial buildings require certificates of insurance, approved work windows and access arranged through building management.

FAQs

NYC Sign Questions

Do I need a permit for a business sign in NYC?

Most business signs need a Department of Buildings permit, and lit signs need an electrical permit as well. Landmarked buildings also need Landmarks Preservation Commission approval.

Do you install signs in all five boroughs?

Yes. We fabricate in Linden, New Jersey and install in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

Can you work after hours in a managed building?

Yes. We schedule early morning, after hours and weekend installs when a building or business requires it.

Can you provide a certificate of insurance for my building?

Yes. We issue certificates of insurance in the name of the building owner or property manager before work starts.
