Sign Company in Hoboken

Custom Signs for Hoboken Businesses

Hoboken is a storefront city. Think of Washington Street, First Street and the uptown business blocks. Add local restaurants, offices, mixed-use buildings and businesses near the PATH and the waterfront. They all sit in a small, very walkable area.

That changes what a business sign has to do.

Our New Jersey team handles storefront signs, channel letters, dimensional lettering, custom awnings and window graphics. We also do blade and projecting signs where allowed, directories, ADA signs, office signs and indoor graphics. We handle tenant changes and sign repair too, from site survey to install.

Sidewalk First

Hoboken Signs Are Designed for the Sidewalk First

Most storefronts here do not sit behind deep parking lots. Customers walk right past the business. They come from both ends of the block or from the PATH station. Some cross the street just a few feet from the door.

Washington Street is the main shopping street. But restaurants, shops, offices, salons, gyms, medical practices and service firms are spread across the other mixed-use streets too. Here, bigger is not always better. A storefront works better when three jobs are kept apart:

Split that way, the storefront reads clearly from across the street and from right beside it.

Storefront Signs

Storefront Signs for Washington Street and Hoboken Business Districts

A Hoboken storefront often has little wall space. Upper floor windows, next door tenants, trim, awnings and glass all compete for the same area. The signs need to fit the building, not cover it.

How It Works

From Site Survey Through Installation

Gogi Signs has served New Jersey businesses since 2005.

01

Site Survey

We measure the storefront and photograph the building front. We note existing signs, brackets, awning frames, mounting points and the entrance.

02

Design and Planning

We fit the artwork to the storefront width, the sign band, the building details and the approvals the address will need.

03

Fabrication and Printing

Once you approve, we build it in our shop. That covers cutting, large format printing, vinyl, finishing and wiring where needed.

04

Installation

Our insured install crew sets up site access. They remove old signs when that is part of the job, then install the new signs and graphics.

05

Future Service

Later, a tenant may change or lights may need repair. Window graphics may need replacing or an awning may need a new cover. We can come back to the property.

Approvals & Historic Review

Hoboken Requires Approval Before a Business Sign Goes Up

Here the order matters more than the size. Much of the Central Business District sits inside the Historic District. Historic Preservation Commission approval comes before the zoning permit.

On an older storefront, the sign has to work around what is already there. That means masonry, classic storefront shapes, cornices and trim, transom windows and old brackets. It also means historic details, upper floor windows and old attachment points. Dimensional lettering, fabric awnings, approved projecting signs, window lettering and well sized wall signs usually fit that building better than an oversized sign.

The order is property first, fabrication second. The application is filed by you or your landlord. We help with drawings and paperwork, but we do not file permits for you.

Using the Glass

The Storefront Should Still Look Like a Storefront

Hoboken businesses often have valuable street level glass. It can carry useful details. But if you fill every window with graphics, the business gets harder to read from the sidewalk. We split storefront glass into three levels:

Privacy is handled on its own. Offices, medical practices, salons and gyms may need frosted or decorative film. That does not mean the whole storefront has to be blocked out. We make cut vinyl lettering, printed window graphics, frosted privacy film and decorative film. We also make door graphics, temporary window graphics, partial coverage and graphics that face inside.

The goal is to use the glass without losing the storefront behind it.

Custom Awnings

Custom Awnings Have a Natural Place in Hoboken

Fabric awnings suit Hoboken’s buildings very well. They mark each storefront bay and make the entrance clear. They add a second place for the business name. And they work with older masonry fronts without a large sign structure.

The City’s street rules cover awnings over sidewalks. Cloth or canvas awnings are allowed with the City’s permission. Support frames must follow set height and projection rules. Any sign, awning or similar item that sticks out over a street or sidewalk needs City review and permission.

We make and install custom fabric awnings with your name, logo, colors, valance lettering and new covers. A sound existing frame can often get new fabric instead of being replaced.

Who We Work With

Businesses We Serve Throughout Hoboken

Street level restaurants and shops, offices and practices upstairs, and the managed buildings that hold both.

Nearby service areas: Hoboken is part of our Hudson County sign company coverage. We also serve nearby businesses through our Jersey City sign company, Union City sign services and West New York business signs pages.

Restaurants and Cafés

Customers read the business at several distances. They see the name from across the street and the awning or projecting sign up close. Then come the hours and menu at the door, and menus and wall graphics inside.

Retail Stores

Outside signs, window graphics, awnings, short term promos and indoor branding.

Professional Offices

Directories, dimensional logos, suite signs, reception signs, privacy film and office plaques. The name alone rarely gets a visitor to the right door.

Medical and Dental Practices

Outside signs, privacy graphics, reception signs, ADA signs, directories and wayfinding.

Mixed-Use and Multi-Tenant

A shop on the first floor, offices upstairs, a separate apartment entrance and a shared lobby. Outside signs, tenant listings at the shared entrance, lobby directories and suite signs.

Property Managers

Tenants change all the time in these buildings. We set standard specs for lobby directories, suite signs, door plaques, ADA and floor signs, awning graphics, replacement panels, leasing graphics and removal.

Salons and Wellness

Storefront signs, window lettering and privacy film for ground floor glass, without closing off the front.

Service Companies

Storefront or office signs, door graphics, indoor signs and vehicle lettering for businesses working across Hudson County.

Tenant Changeover

Taking Over an Existing Hoboken Storefront?

Older business spaces come with sign hardware already in place. We inspect it before we decide what has to be rebuilt.

What you may inherit

A good awning frame may only need a new cover. A directory may need one tenant listing. A sound bracket may be reused if the new sign and the City’s approval allow it. Using an existing mounting spot can also save needless work on the building front.

What the changeover covers

Other parts may be worn, unsafe, in the wrong place or a poor fit for the new business. Those come off.

Repair & Refacing

Sign Repair, Refacing, and Replacement

Hoboken has many older storefront signs, so a project often starts with something already on the building. Lights fail, letters come loose and faces fade. Vinyl wears, awning fabric ages, tenant names change and directory listings go out of date.

Gogi Signs repairs and updates business signs, even when another company built them. Common service work includes:

If the old structure is still useful, a repair or new face may make more sense than a new sign. When repair is no longer practical, we can build a new sign. It needs the same approvals as any new sign.

Warehouse & Logistics

Warehouse, Logistics and Industrial Signage

Hudson County still plays a key role in logistics. It sits beside Manhattan and Newark, with major highways, rail lines, ports and regional transit. That keeps logistics and related business strong, mostly in the western and southern parts of the county.

Serving Hoboken

Serving Hoboken and the Hudson County Market

Gogi Signs serves businesses throughout Hoboken, including around:

Hoboken’s tight street grid and mixed-use buildings make its sign needs very different from nearby suburbs. Businesses here need strong signs for people on foot, storefront graphics and indoor tenant signs. The signs also need to work with the existing building.

Some companies have several Hudson County locations. Our New Jersey shop can be your one source for building and installing signs. Each address is still handled to its own town rules.

Get Started

Planning a Sign Project in Hoboken?

You may be opening a Washington Street storefront, taking over a restaurant or moving into a mixed-use building. You may need an office directory updated, an awning recovered, window graphics added or a sign fixed. In every case, start with the exact property address and photos.

The address matters even more here. Zoning and historic review may decide the sign type before anything is drawn.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Signs in Hoboken

Yes. Hoboken states that a permit is required before erecting, installing, painting, altering, or relocating a sign. Sign approval is part of the zoning permit process.

The City’s business guide lists wall signs, window signs and awning signs as common types. It notes that other types may also be used under the zoning ordinance.

Possibly. Much of Hoboken’s Central Business District overlaps the Historic District. Businesses in that area need Historic Preservation Commission approval for a new sign or a change to the building front. That comes before the zoning permit.

Hoboken allows some cloth or canvas awnings over sidewalks, with City permission and size limits. Signs, awnings and other items that stick out over a street or sidewalk need review and approval.

Sometimes. We check the frame, attachment points, size and condition first. Then we tell you if new fabric on it is practical.

Yes. We can remove the old sign. We inspect the mounting, wiring, brackets, awning frames, directories and other parts to see what can be reused.

Yes. If your sign system allows single parts to be swapped, we can make a new tenant listing, office plaque or suite sign. We do not need to replace the whole system.

Yes. We make frosted film, decorative film, cut vinyl, logos, privacy bands and other graphics for storefront and indoor glass.

Yes. We can inspect and service existing business signs, no matter who made them, when repair is safe and practical.

Send the exact Hoboken property address and storefront photos. Add your logo or artwork, photos of any signs already there, and any landlord or property sign rules you have. The address matters most, because zoning and historic review may affect the sign.
