Bridgewater Rules

Five Bridgewater Sign Rules That Catch Businesses Out

These are the Bridgewater rules we raise before a design is drawn.

No phone numbers

Permanent signs in Bridgewater may not display a telephone number. Put it on the door or the window instead.

Window signs count

Signs inside the glass that are meant to be read from outside count toward your total sign area.

Parked vehicles can count

A lettered vehicle readable from the street becomes a sign if it stays in one spot for more than 8 hours in 24.

Multi tenant sites need a plan

Shopping centers, industrial parks and multi tenant buildings submit one coordinated sign plan to the Planning Board.

No flashing or moving signs

Flashing and moving signs are not allowed, apart from time and temperature and changeable copy displays.

Setbacks

How Far Back a Freestanding Sign Must Sit

Bridgewater sets the distance from the street right of way by the size of the sign. Freestanding signs are also limited to the zone’s building height or 25 feet, whichever is less.

20 ft
Signs under 25 square feet
At least 20 feet from the right of way.
Typical of a small monument at an office drive.
25 ft
26 to 75 square feet
At least 25 feet from the right of way.
Most single tenant monument signs.
30 ft
76 square feet or more
At least 30 feet from the right of way.
Larger center signs. The Planning Board may waive this where the site requires.
channel letters for kiehl
Halo lit letters with no box behind them.

Wall Signs

Working Within 5% of the Facade

For a single tenant building, every building mounted sign together may cover 5% of the face toward the street, up to 100 square feet. A building front 80 feet wide and 20 feet tall gives 80 square feet. On a multi tenant site the Planning Board may allow up to 7% of the facade as part of an approved sign plan.

Because the allowance is tight, we design for legibility over size: high contrast channel letters or dimensional letters, no background box and no phone line. The permit fee is $5 for signs up to five square feet and $1 per square foot above that.

Frequently asked questions about signs in Bridgewater Township

How big can a business sign be in Bridgewater Township?

All building-mounted signs together may not exceed 5% of the building face that fronts the street, and never more than 100 square feet. One freestanding sign is allowed per property under the same 5% / 100 square foot limit. (§ 126-195D.) The exact allowance depends on the zone and the building, which we confirm during the site survey.

Do I need a permit for a sign in Bridgewater Township?

A permit is required to erect, alter or rebuild a sign. The fee is $5 for signs up to five square feet and $1 per square foot above that. Area is measured over the whole background including frame and wall support; a two-sided sign counts one face. (§ 126-195F(7).) We prepare the drawings and details the application asks for, and help you or your landlord file it.

How long does a sign project take in Bridgewater Township?

Fabrication time depends on the sign, but the variable that usually moves the date most is municipal approval. A flat panel or vinyl job can move quickly; an illuminated sign that needs permits and an electrical inspection takes longer. We give a schedule after the survey, once we know which approvals apply.

What kinds of signs do you make for Bridgewater Township businesses?

Storefront and building signage, channel letters, illuminated cabinets, interior and ADA signage, wayfinding, window and wall graphics, and vehicle graphics. If you are not sure which suits the site, the survey usually settles it.

Can you replace just the face of an existing sign in Bridgewater Township?

Often yes, when the cabinet's structure, size, location and electrical condition are still sound. Replacing a face can still count as new signage under some ordinances, so we check whether the existing sign conforms before quoting a reface.
