Sign Rules

Who Decides What Your Sign Can Be in New Jersey

There is no single New Jersey sign code. The answer depends on the town, and sometimes on the block, so we check the rules for the exact address before anything is designed.

The Town's Zoning Ordinance Sets the size, number, placement and lighting of signs. Two neighboring towns can allow very different signs on the same kind of building.
Construction and Electrical Permits Larger and lit signs also need permits under the state's Uniform Construction Code, which the town's construction office issues. Small, unlit ground signs are exempt, as the state code sets out.
Redevelopment Areas Many downtowns and corridors have redevelopment plans with their own sign standards that override the general ordinance.
Historic Districts Locally designated districts add a design review for materials, lighting and placement.
Landlords and Shopping Centers Tenant sign criteria are often stricter than the town's limits and must be approved first.

By Region

How Sign Work Differs Across the State

North Jersey

Dense downtowns, mixed use blocks and redevelopment areas, where frontage is narrow and rules are detailed.

Central Jersey

Highway retail, business parks and university and hospital campuses, with more freestanding and wayfinding work.

Jersey Shore

Seasonal storefronts and salt air, where materials and fixings need to cope with the coast.

South Jersey

Casino and boardwalk districts in Atlantic City and the downtown and waterfront in Camden.

FAQs

New Jersey Sign Questions

Do business signs need a permit in New Jersey?

Most permanent signs do. The town's zoning office approves the sign, and larger or lit signs also need construction and electrical permits. Our guide on New Jersey sign permits explains the steps.

Do you work in every New Jersey town?

Yes. We fabricate in Linden and install across all 21 counties, including towns that do not have their own page here.

Are site surveys free in New Jersey?

Yes, anywhere in the state. The survey measures the wall, checks the power and photographs the building for the permit drawings.

Do you help with the sign permit?

Yes. We check the ordinance for the address and prepare the drawings and details the application asks for.
