Acrylic is made through a heat transfer process and can be further shaped through similar heat. The acrylic comes in sheets that are cut and bent into the required shape and size.
The sheets can be made in thicknesses ranging from ⅛” to over 1”, with thicker dimensions offering additional rigidity for larger signs. To create the needed shape, acrylic is cut on a CNC router or with a laser cutter depending on the thickness. Both these methods create a clean edge in the acrylic. Acrylic can also be engraved or frosted, helping create products that look similar to etched glass.
Standard acrylic is made clear, but it can also have coloring mixed in for either a shaded translucent plastic or an opaque one. Colors that acrylic signs are typically made with include:
Acrylic letters do not require printed graphics, so they are more often created from colored acrylic in a company’s color palette, for a richer color and deeper color.
When printing on acrylic signs, the graphics are printed directly onto the sign’s surface with UV ink from the design file. Printing can be done in any colors and large scale sizes with wide format printing.
Lightweight acrylic is easy to install. Options are based on where the sign will be placed, and include:
Shatter Resistance – Although it looks like glass, acrylic will not shatter if dropped, giving it a safety advantage. It can possibly crack, however, so it should still be handled carefully.
Lightweight – In addition to being easy to transport if needed, the low weight of acrylic signs makes them easy to install – both in terms of manpower and what is needed to support them.
Waterproof – Acrylic is non-porous, so water will run off it without staining or creating a place for mold to build up.
